★★★★ It can be a little maddening, but this is a movie that deals definitively and to the limit with that primordial fear of the dark, and it does so from a child’s perspective. Starting point: children who wake up at night and find themselves locked up with their parents missing. The film is as much a technical challenge as it is the patient and fearsome construction of something terrifying that explodes in the final minutes. Rarity, but a good one.
