Ski jumping: New contract for national coach Horngacher “almost through” – ski jumping – winter sports

Stefan Horngacher will remain national coach of the German ski jumpers for at least one year. Horst Hüttel, sports director at the German Ski Association, said on Friday (03/25/2022) the sports show: “As far as next year goes, we’re pretty much done.”

Hüttel: “WM 2023 under his direction”

“The 2023 World Cup in Planica will certainly still be under his direction. There is also a good chance that he will remain a coach beyond that.”, said Hüttel on the sidelines of the Ski Flying World Cup in Planica, Slovenia. Horngacher had previously stated that a contract extension would only “depend on small things”, “But these shouldn’t be a problem.” Horngacher has been the German national coach since 2019, his contract with the DSV expires after the end of the season.

Horngacher: “It is fun”

Horngacher drew a positive balance of his previous work. “Every year we have managed to win medals and be among the front runners. The three years have been very satisfying. It’s fun”. The 52-year-old looks back on the past winter with mixed feelings.

“The season hasn’t been perfect, but that never happens.” Horngacher rates the comebacks of Stephan Leyhe and Andreas Wellinger positively, as does the performance of Markus Eisenbichler, who was unable to train for a long time after an injury in the summer. And: “Karl, of course.”

Karl Geiger wore the yellow jersey for a long time this season and still has chances for the overall World Cup. In addition, Geiger celebrated Olympic silver in the individual jumping on the large hill. In team jumping, the Germans also celebrated Olympic silver and ski flying silver. “Everywhere there are medals, we have won medals”said Horngacher.

Tour: “Someday it will work”

At the Four Hills Tournament, however, the Germans remained without a podium place in the overall ranking. Geiger and Eisenbichler finished fourth and fifth. “We went into the tour very optimistically, Karl was very good. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out. Then we have to wait another year, have to prepare again. And at some point it will work out.”Horngacher looks back.
