Ski jumping: German World Cup coup in Sapporo

Ski jumper Katharina Althaus celebrated her third win of the season on her return to Japan.

The Olympic silver medalist won on the Okurayama large hill in Sapporo ahead of world champion Ema Klinec (Slovenia) and Austria’s Eva Pinkelnig, the leader in the overall World Cup.

After a three-year absence, a World Cup took place in Asia for the first time.

Althaus flew on 122.0 and 131.0 m and took the eleventh victory of her career. The woman from Oberstdorf was already in the lead after the first round.

Selina Freitag, who jumped onto the podium for the first time in her career in third place on New Year’s Day in Ljubno, rounded off the strong DSV result with sixth place. Pauline Hessler (Lauscha) also achieved her best result of the season as 17th.

In the overall World Cup, Althaus, who was on the podium for the sixth time in the tenth competition of the winter, is still second with 627 points behind Pinkelnig (776).

Another competition is scheduled for Sunday in Sapporo.
