Violinist with a small step forward
Things did not go well for the overall World Cup leader Karl Geiger on his 29th birthday either. When he touched down at 128 meters, he was still happy. Even if the jump was only enough for twelfth place, it was a step forward again. The man from Oberstdorf had delivered reliably in the World Cup, but Geiger has not yet made friends with the Olympic hills.
Smith solid
Constantin Schmid did well with 127 meters (19th place), but with this distance is not one of the top favorites for the medals. “The hill has its pitfalls, but I’m well on track,” assessed the youngster in the team. The 22-year-old still had a sniff of medals from the normal hill at half-time, but had to bury his hopes with a weaker second round. Eleventh he was best DSV-Eagle.
Packe weaker than in training
Pius Paschke could not confirm the training performance in the competition at his first Olympic start. Born in Munich, he landed at 119 meters and finished 30th in qualifying.
50 of 56 jumpers further
As with the qualification from the normal hill, this qualification was only a matter of form: Of the 56 participants who started, only six got stuck.
Stephan Leyhe wasn’t even allowed to take part. The Willinger was sorted out by head coach Stefan Horngacher because Pius Paschke was a bit more stable in training. The veteran, who was only a spectator from the normal hill, was awarded the contract.
New movement after farce in Mixed-Team
Also apart from the qualification, the scandal in the Mixed-Jump still hotly debated. There seems to be movement in terms of the regulations. Horst Hüttl, sporting director, explained in an interview with Sportschau that there are considerations of shifting control “up”. Means: If the athlete jumps, the result is counted. There will then no longer be a disqualification after the jump.
