Ski jumper Severin Freund ends his career, ski jumping – ski jumping – winter sports

Severin Freund celebrated one of his greatest successes in Planica – the 33-year-old will also have his last jump as a ski jumper on the Monsterschanze in Slovenia. The career of the longtime top jumper ends on Sunday (03/27/2022) on the Letalnica.

250 World Cup competitions

This was announced on Sunday shortly before the first round of the ski jumpers’ season finale in the sports show. After exactly 250 World Cup competitions, 14 World Championships and three Olympics, an impressive ski jumping career comes to an end in the sunshine of the Julian Alps.

Olympic Gold 2014 – Overall World Cup 2015

Between 2011 and around 2016, the Rastbüchler was the best German ski jumper. During this time he celebrated Olympic gold in 2014 with the team, the world titles on the large hill (2015) and in ski flying (2014), won the overall World Cup in 2015 and finished second at the Four Hills Tournament 2015/2016, his best result.

Many injuries from 2017

After that, the career of the Munich-based show jumper was repeatedly interrupted by injuries and operations. He suffered the worst injury in January 2017: he tore his cruciate ligament during training. After healing, a second cruciate ligament tear followed in July 2017. Freund missed the 2018 Olympics and only returned to the World Cup for the 2018/2019 season.

Due to another knee operation, he missed the 2019 World Championships. In the meantime Freund started in the Continental Cup, but fought his way back into the World Cup in the 2021/22 season. Rastbüchler, who lives in Munich, celebrated his last great success at the beginning of March when he won silver with the German team at the Ski Flying World Championships in Vikersund.

During this time, Freund flew to an Olympic victory in 2014, eleven World Championship medals in ski jumping and ski flying, and 22 World Cup victories. Freund is also the last German overall World Cup winner. After the 2014/2015 season, he narrowly defeated Peter Prevc.
