Ski flying in Oberstdorf – qualification canceled

The ski pilots in Oberstdorf have to be patient. Qualification for the World Cup was canceled on Thursday. The reason for the cancellation is the weather. The strong and changing wind makes a ski flying event on the gigantic Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill impossible on Thursday.

The qualification should be rescheduled on Saturday. Race director Sandro Pertile confirmed this in the ARD sports show. The Italian explained that it would have been too dangerous to jump in the given conditions. “We have very unstable wind conditions. Especially at the take-off table, the gusts were very strong, up to eight meters per second. It was very unstable, so there was no risk.”

Horngacher: “We still have three days”

“The wind was simply too strong. It was too changeable today. Qualification would not have been possible.”, national coach Stefan Horngacher also confirmed the jury’s decision to cancel the qualification. Nobody can do anything about the foehn weather situation, so we have to deal with it now. “We were well adjusted and well prepared. The boys were of course looking forward to ski flying, but we still have three days and the weather forecast is getting better.”

Rejection was the right decision for Sven Hannawald

For ARD ski jumping expert Sven Hannawald, the cancellation is also absolutely the right decision: “The cushion under the ski is simply higher. If everything works, it’s a dream. But on days like today you need a solid base, and if you don’t have that “It’s going to be difficult,” said the former ski jumping star. And further: “It would have been different with ski jumping, you can try a little more. But ski flying is too dangerous. If someone falls, you don’t know what the outcome will be.”
