Sipke van der Schaar beats Renoir at van Praal tot Prul in Beverwijk

At the Van Praal tot Prul appraisal day in Beverwijk, a painting by the painter Sipke van der Schaar turned up. The painting was valued at between twelve and fourteen thousand euros. An etching made by the French impressionist Auguste Renoir did not come close to that with a valuation of three thousand euros.

Throughout the day, people who had registered in advance could come to Museum Kennemerland to have their art object assessed by an expert appraiser. There was great interest and the day was fully booked in no time. From 10 a.m. the first interested parties were at the door with the most diverse objects.

Not only paintings, but also statues, books and there was even a young man who came to have an antique hunting sword appraised. “I found it in my grandparents’ attic and I’ve been keeping it for a long time,” he says. “I’m curious what it’s worth and how it was used.”

Top valuation

The surprise of the day was a canvas by the Frisian painter Sipke van der Schaar: an oil painting that was valued at an amount of twelve to fourteen thousand euros. Van der Schaar lived from 1871 to 1961 and worked for some time in the IJmond. He lived in Beverwijk and Wijk aan Zee for a while and also made a number of works there.

Appraiser Jeroen Zoetmulder is enthusiastic about the discovery: “It is a very beautiful work that depicts a mother feeding her child porridge. We have somewhat adopted Van de Schaar here in the region, so it is extra nice that the canvas has appeared.” , says Zoetmulder.

Chain of office

However, the fourteen thousand euros for van der Schaar’s painting was not the highest valuation amount that was determined today in the Museum Kennemerland, says Jeroen Zoetmulder. That record was reserved for the first item that ended up on the valuation table immediately after the opening of the manifestation: the chain of office of the mayor of Beverwijk.

According to Zoetmulder, a special example: “I have regularly appraised official chains for insurance, but the Beverwijk chain is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen.” The insurance value of the chain of office was valued at thirty-five thousand euros.

Renoir

Much was expected in advance of a work by the French impressionist Renoir, which it was known that someone would come up with. But because it turned out to be an etching, the appraisal value was lower. An etching is a printed matter of which there are usually more copies. This etching was of good quality and signed by the artist himself. The work was valued at three thousand euros.

The appraisal day From Praal to Prul in Museum Kennemerland was attended by more than a hundred interested parties.
