Sintopía: the art of Betiana Bradas that fuses geometry and gestures

Betiana Bradas opens the doors of her art and thus invites us on a journey through the innermost part of her expression. Her work Sintopía de ella brings together a set of works that belong to the Portales series by the same author. With a selection of geometric sculptures, medium and large format paintings with the artist’s unique language that fuses skill in gestural abstraction and pure geometry.

In these, although a neutral palette of gray, white and black colors predominates, in some works vibrant shades of yellow emerge. On the canvases, the true protagonist is the drawing.

When Bradas draws, the world stops, she abstracts from what surrounds her and her hand flows almost automatically across the paper. Some sketches appear practically identical, especially in his sculptures, in other cases he only rescues a fragment that expands across the canvas. His designs combine modulated lines of different thicknesses, meandering and organic, but also straight lines that cross the fabric with surgical precision. The drawings are transformed into patterns that jump from one work to another and appear repeatedly as a trace of the artist’s own interiority. One of the drawings that appears most frequently is reminiscent of the black membranes on the wings of butterflies.

Sintopía is a word that fuses synthesis and utopia. It can be understood as a place of confluence, of union in the same space and time. A place where there are no barriers or limits. Bradas’ work is a place of confluence, a meeting of multiple spaces and times.
