Sint-Janskerk Anzegem open to the public after 2 years of restoration

Nine years ago, the Sint-Janskerk in Anzegem was completely destroyed by a major fire. Today the church tower has been almost completely restored.

The ceiling has been restored to its original state with a wooden vault. A new clockwork has been installed at the top of the church. The entire interior space under the roof of the Romanesque tower has also been completely renovated. “The plaster, the roof, the tower, they all had to stabilize and rebuild. I think that an incredible amount of work has been done in two years,” says first alderman Louis Degroote.

NEW INDOOR GARDEN

The remains of the nave of the church are now being propped up, but that will later become an inner garden. The designs will be presented in April. Only a number of blackened sculpted flower tiles could be saved from the inside of the church, the statue of Saint John and the stone altar in the right aisle could still be saved from the fire.
