Sint-Corneliuskerk reopens with neighborhood library and music classes

The Sint-Corneliuskerk on Aalbekeplaats underwent a thorough transformation. The aisles of the church, for example, now provide space for the neighborhood library of Aalbeke and four music classes of the Conservatory. These functions are transferred from the Old Town Hall. The classrooms and the library are accessible from a central foyer that also serves as a multipurpose room for lectures and concerts or as a reading room for the library.

Church worship

The exterior structure of the church has been almost completely preserved. The valuable stained glass windows were renovated and fitted with protective double glazing. The roof received new windows that allow daylight to enter the central foyer. The library side also received new windows and access to a terrace. The church also has room for religious services. These take place in the former choir section, which was renamed the Sint-Corneliuskapel and which has room for 80 seats. Services will mainly take place in an intimate atmosphere, such as the devotion to Saint Cornelius.

Archaeological finds

Archaeological finds also came to light during the works on the floor. They show a rich history that goes back at least to the Middle Ages. Archaeologists from BAAC (commissioned by the Immovable Heritage Agency) were able to uncover several foundations from different predecessors of the church. It is thanks to the excavations over the entire surface of the church that the old church phases can be mapped in their entirety.
