Sinner, here’s the new coach: who is Magnus Norman

Coach of the year in 2016, the former Swedish champion is the one chosen to join Simone Vagnozzi in the new team of the South Tyrolean Top 10

After leaving the nest of the Piatti Tennis Center that welcomed and rocked him for the entire adolescence, Jannik Sinner has decided that the time has come to start walking alone and to continue his path on the Tour flanked by new professional profiles. Confirmed the presence of Simone Vagnozzi in the new technical staff of the Alto Adige, who is preparing to leave for the Dubai tournament staged from 21 to 27 February, Sinner’s team will be enriched by the figure of the supercoach Magnus Norman, who swept away the competition from legends such as John Mc Eroe and Boris Becker – the latter even already working with Sinner in a videocall during Australia, by mutual agreement with Piatti.

THE IDENTIKIT

As a player Norman achieved a best ranking of n. 2 in the world and won 12 singles titles, as well as winning the 1998 Davis Cup in Milan against Italy. He played a Grand Slam semifinal at the Australian Open in 2000 and in the same year he qualified for the final of Roland Garros, where he canceled 10 match points at Guga Kuerten before giving up (characteristic, the mental strength, which undoubtedly unites him to Sinner). After his retirement he gradually built a reputation as a great coach, coaching compatriots Thomas Johansson and Robin Söderling in their respective career finals. Under his wing, Soderling achieved a best ranking of # 4 in the world and played two consecutive finals at the French Open in 2009 and 2010, years in which he also managed to qualify for the ATP World Tour Finals.

THE FIRST OF THE CLASS

Grigor Dmitrov also made use of the advice of the 45-year-old Swede at a very young age, but Norman’s most successful collaboration remains the one with Stan Wawrinka, which lasted eight years. Together with the Swiss, then already 28 years old, starting from the 2013 season he reached a best ranking of 3 in the world, won three Grand Slam events (Australian Open 2014, Roland Garros 2015 and US Open 2016) and the Masters 1000 di Monte -Carlo in 2014, also managing to qualify each year for the Finals.

Thanks to the results achieved in the corner of “Stan The man”, in 2016 he won the first edition of the “Coach of the Year” award, beating the competition of Ivan Lendl and Mikael Tillstrom. Now, the new adventure in the Sinner team could giving Norman the opportunity to carry out a plan he has not yet had the opportunity to carry out, which is to lead a player to peak expression and blow him up to high levels from a young age.
