The first challenge on earth between the two friends, Jannik Sinner and Hubi Hurkacz, becomes a knot on itself, goes away slowly and jerkily, changes its appearance several times. In the end, the South Tyrolean wins, who is down by a set and a break before canceling match points in the tie break of the second set: the number 8 in the world wins one of his matches, with a score of 3-6 7- 6 6-1, and gives himself the quarterfinals against one between Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti. These are the challenges in which you realize you have a very great player in front of your eyes, who as such managed the match point in the second set – a tough exchange, played with attention and authority to wear down the opponent – and then sprint in the third.

SINNE LOSES THE 1ST SET

From the first minutes, it is clear that it can be a complex game to interpret and, for Sinner, to take home. Jannik has two break points in the first game and he sees the door slammed in his face by Hurkacz’s aces, which will be 15 at the end of the game. From a possible break for the South Tyrolean to a sprint for the Pole, who in the first game in response immediately snatches the service to the opponent and then snaps to 3-0, still clinging to the aces after being caught up to 40-40 by 40-0. Three games, in fact, in which the score tells little, in fact nothing. Hurkacz thus takes home the first set, saving two more break points in the fifth game after having even three to move up 4-0.

SINNER CANCEL MATCH POINT

Difficult first set to interpret but deservedly won by a decisive and precise Hurkacz, effective with his serve and perfect with his backhand. Sinner gradually adds variations but the match seems to get out of hand when, in the third game of the second set, Hurkacz wins another game in response and accelerates again. Jannik here is good at returning immediately to the partial, with the immediate counterbreak despite a crazy point won by Hurkacz in demivolée at 0-30. The tie break comes after another break point canceled by the Pole, in the eighth game, obviously with the serve. Fundamental to which the number 13 in the world also clings in the tie break, in which Sinner cancels a match point at 6-5 after an exchange played with the calm and attention of the greats. Jannik earns the third set finally managing to win a point in response: first in the field of Hurkacz, response from the Italian and straight into the net by the Pole.

JANNIK SPREADS

And Sinner could not start better, thanks to an opponent out of line: three mistakes by Hurkacz and an immediate break by Jannik, in the first game of the third set. The inertia is all on the side of the South Tyrolean and the Pole’s percentage of primes drops, who sees the game go away with a further break for Sinner’s 4-1, lethal with the backhand pass as happened several times in the rest of the match. Simone Vagnozzi’s pupil archives the practice with a third break, passes an insidious test and finds victory number 23 of his 2023 at the highest level.
