An observant passer-by in Geldrop managed to prevent the tiles of a cycle path from literally sinking into the ground. He saw that the tiles were a bit loose and stuck a branch into them. When municipal employees saw the branch and went to see what was going on, it turned out that there was a sinkhole under the cycle path that could tear open at any moment.
The municipality’s field staff were surprised when they saw a twig sticking out on the cycle path on Laan der Vierheemskinderen on Wednesday afternoon. “They saw that there was a hole in the path and decided to remove some tiles,” says a spokesperson.
They then discovered a hole of about two by two meters with a swirling layer of water in it. “Luckily they discovered it in time and worse was prevented,” the spokesperson responded. You would think that the sinkhole was caused by heavy rainfall in recent days, but the cause appears to be a burst water pipe.
The municipality has cordoned off the area and cyclists and pedestrians are being diverted. Brabant Water has now installed the water pipe. “Tomorrow the tiles will be put back on and the fence will be removed.”
