Sinkeldam dismounts in Giro d’Italia; stomach problems break up cyclist

Ramon Sinkeldam did not start today in the fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia. The cyclist from Assendelft experienced too much trouble with his stomach and is thus the first Dutch dropout in the Italian stage race.

Sinkeldam, who plays for Alpecin-Deceuninck, was in his eleventh Grand Tour and the first for his new team. It is the fourth time that Sinkeldam participated in the Giro. In 2020, the 34-year-old cyclist also had to end the battle prematurely. Last year and in 2019, Sinkeldam did reach the finish line in Milan.

The Giro d’Italia will run until Sunday 28 May. Due to the failure of Sinkeldam, there are no more North Holland riders in the race.
