Singer with 60 years of experience appears at Secret duets, half of the panel has no idea: ‘I’m very sorry’ | show

In the singing show, famous artists duet with someone they can’t see. Using the voice and some hints, they have to guess who is on the other side of a thick wall. That can be a professional vocalist, but also a celebrity who is not known to be able to sing.

There was no doubt about the latter with the duet of panelist and The Kik singer Dave von Raven: behind the wall was clearly an experienced artist. Dave knew right away that the person was a man, but he didn’t get any further. The hint video didn’t get him any further either.

There were hiking boots and an indistinct flag, a merry-go-round and cotton candy. A bunch of roses with an incomplete card and the text ‘for S’. And an old logo of the Eurovision Song Contest. The roses reminded Dave of a song by Jacques Herb, but it couldn’t be him, because he had already participated once before.

,,I see a smile on your face there”, host Jamai Loman said to Dave after the first bit of duet. He misread that emotion. “That’s a smile of nothing, because I really have no idea.”

Jamai thought it was ‘very special’ that the artist was there, he put the pressure on. ,,I’m really a bit confused”, said guessing panel member Soy Kroon. ,,I think this is really a generational thing, that maybe I don’t know this.” He still mentioned Jacques d’Ancona, or ‘those types’. Emma only heard that the person had to be “really, really old.”

Perhaps the last hint would help: this one secret singer never loses his American accent. Jeroen van der Boom saw his suspicion confirmed and Dave also knew enough by now. Because the flag turned out to be from the Nijmegen Four Days Marches, to which the shoes also referred. The artist has walked it six times with his husband to raise money for his own foundation for disabled children.

The Eurovision song contest passed because the man participated in it twice, and those roses were for Sandra: a reference to the hit Roses for Sandra from 1971. The carousel and cotton candy were featured because of the hit To the fair from 1975. And he has that American accent because he lived in America for a long time. The secret singer was Ronnie Tober, the artist who has been singing since 1960. “How old is Ronnie Tober?” was immediately one of the most Googled questions in the Netherlands, the answer: 78 years.

Tober is alegend‘ said Dave. He was right, just like Jeroen. Soy filled in a question mark. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” he said. Emma hadn’t even filled in anything at all. “I am very sorry, I wrote even less. I just really didn’t know.” The panel waved Tober off with a standing ovation.
