Singer Irene Cara, known for world hit Fame, passed away at the age of 63 | show

Singer and actress Irene Cara has passed away at the age of 63. The American was best known for the title songs of the films Fame and Flash dancewith which she scored big hits in the 80s.

Cara died at her home in Florida, her publicist announced via the singer’s official Twitter account and on her website. The cause of death is still unknown. Her funeral is now being prepared, at a later date there should also be a memorial service for her fans.

According to some Twitter users, earlier this week the news that the singer had died was wrong. Cara’s official account assures that it is not a hoax now.

Cara became world famous in the early eighties for her role as Coco Hernandez in the musical film Fame, for which she also provided the soundtrack. It earned her two Grammy Awards at the time. The song became a number 1 hit in the Netherlands.

She also sang the title song a few years later Flash dancealso known as What a feeling. Cara again received a Grammy for it and was even awarded an Oscar for best original song. That song also became a worldwide hit.

Cara then played in various films and TV series, but her success never became so great again. In recent years she has lived a secluded life in Florida. According to Cara’s publicist, the singer and actress will “live on forever through her music and movies.”
