Anita Pointer, one of four members of the group The Pointer Sisters, passed away Saturday at the age of 74. Her family announced this in a statement. According to her publicist, Rogel Neal, she passed away from cancer in her Beverly Hills home surrounded by her family.

“While we are deeply saddened by the loss of Anita, we take comfort in knowing that she is now with her daughter Jada and her sisters June and Bonnie and at peace,” the family said. Anita’s daughter Jada passed away in 2003. ,,She was the one who kept us all close and together for so long. Her love for our family will live on in each of us.”

The Pointer Sisters were founded in 1969 and initially consisted of four sisters: Ruth, Anita, Bonnie and June. June passed away in 2006, Bonnie in 2020. The sisters scored their first hits in the early 1970s, with their very first success being the song ‘Yes we Can Can’, which was on their debut album in 1973. Bonnie left the band in 1978, after which The Pointer Sisters would score some of their greatest hits, such as ‘I’m so exited’ (1982) and ‘Jump (For My Love)’ (1983).

The sisters grew up in a pastor’s family, only listened to gospel as a child and started singing in church. Anita was the second oldest. Ruth, Anita, Bonnie and June recorded five records and won several awards, including three Grammy Awards. Ruth is now the only sister still alive. In addition, there are two brothers: Fritz and Aaron.
