Draft agreement
The intention is to have a draft coalition agreement on the table in a week to a week and a half. That should be approved by the council in mid-June. The new aldermen must then also be installed.

Incumbent councilor Wiel Schleijpen of Citizen Interests says it is the will and intention of the four parties to form the new coalition together. “It would surprise me if we couldn’t work it out. But of course it will only be finalized once an agreement has been reached,” said Schleijpen.

Aldermen
In addition to the content of the coalition programme, Citizen Interests, Leefbaar Simpelveld, CDA and Lokaal Actief must also agree on the distribution of alderman posts. By law, Simpelveld is allowed to have a maximum of three FTEs of aldermen. This means that at least some of the work must be done with part-time aldermen in order to give all four parties a chance.

At the end of April, Citizen Interests, as the second largest party, took the initiative in forming the coalition. As usual, as the largest party, Samen 1 had taken the lead in forming a coalition after the March elections. But the three other local parties saw nothing in cooperation with Samen 1.

Seats
As a result, that party is now the only party in the opposition, despite the fact that it was the big winner of the elections and rose from two to five seats. In those elections, Burgerbelangen and Leefbaar Simpelveld retained their four and three seats respectively. Local Active dropped from three to one seat, the CDA from three to two seats.
