The chef, restaurateur Sikke Sumari, 70, learns about his 17th-century ancestor in the next episode of The Secrets of My Family To Carl Billsten.

Billsten was Finland’s first ironworks cartridge. He founded Billnäs Ruukki in Raseborg.

Sumari hears Carl was born in Stockholm. Carl’s parents were wealthy German burghers who, among other things, supplied wine to the king.

After his studies, Carl moved to Turku, where he had the opportunity to get rich in the customs business. In addition, Carl traded, without official permission, though.

In 1640, Carl built a blast furnace and two hammer mills in Billnäs. She got a queen From Kristiina ironworks law and six years of tax exemption, as iron production was very important to the krona.

A rival ironworks entrepreneur bounced and burned down Carl’s buildings. However, this did not give up but continued to operate.

– On the island of Muhu, where I have NamiNamaste, a really valuable old building also burned down. Someone else might have punched the gloves in.

– I built a new building in it! I have Carlin’s blood! Sumari gets excited to hear history.

“Goes under the skin”

Carl founded another Ruukki, Fagervik, in Inkoo. He also settled there.

Carl increased his fortune to the point that he was eventually able to live like a nobleman. He expanded from ironworks to trade, this time with official agreements.

Carl took his goods to Stockholm and Tallinn on his own ships.

After his death, Ruukki started to get worse. Great anger plagued Finland, the plague killed the workers and the Russians plundered. Ruukki’s area was practically ruined in the 1710s. In the coming decades Singerien the family bought the place.

– This somehow goes under the skin. Really exciting and interesting, Sumari says when he hears about his ancestor.

He is already starting to plan to buy a plot of land in the Ruukki area.

The ethos of survival

Sikke herself has grown up in a family of four daughters. His father was a self-employed person. From there came the lesson that challenges should not be feared. And that there is money sometimes, sometimes not.

– I have always had the feeling that I can handle myself, Sumari sums up the basics of his upbringing.

In addition to his ancestor Carl, the ethos of survival has probably become a merchant legend in the 19th century. From SpongeBob Kettus or From Husband Germany from the maternal side of the family.

– It’s a scary looking guy! Sumari exclaims when he sees the picture of Husband Germany.

Uk Germany had rare foreign trade rights. From Savo, he was allowed to trade in St. Petersburg, among other places.

Kaima-Sikke

Among them are the German state where Ukko-Saksa has lived.

The Sumar ancestors who have been on the move in Säynääinen have already traveled before this. The 17th century can be found, among other things Siegfried Kettunenwhose nickname happened to be Sikke.

– You are not the first Sikke in the family, presenter Marja Hintikka reveals to Sumari.

Ukko-Germany was ahead of its time because, contrary to the custom of the time, it wanted to share its heritage evenly. The daughters were also demolished.

Ukko-Saksa also bought the Koskenhov manor from Joroinen – in cash. And there, in the yard of the manor, is the present owner, a relative of Sumar, too.
