Sigur Rós: New album ÀTTA will be released on June 16th

The single harbinger “Blóðberg” was released on June 12th. A physical release of the new record will follow on September 1st.

Icelandic Sigur Rós have released their first full-length studio album in over a decade. ÀTTA is the name of the record and the digital version will be out on Friday, June 16th. A physical release will follow on September 1st. On June 12th, the post-rockers already released the single “Blóðberg” along with the music video.

ÀTTA will be the group’s first work since the return of multi-instrumentalist Kjartan Sveinsson. It was recorded at the band’s studios in Iceland, as well as at Abbey Road and a number of American studios. ÀTTA also features guest contributions from the London Contemporary Orchestra and Brassgat í bala. Singer Jón Þór Birgisson said in a press statement that the album will sound “minimalist”. “We’re getting older and more cynical, so I just wanted to move something inside of us to make us feel something.”

“We wanted to allow ourselves to be a little dramatic and go a long way with these arrangements. That’s what the world needs right now,” added Sveinsson. “It’s hard to describe, but for me everything is always open to interpretation. People can think and feel however they want.”

The previous proper release of Sigur Rós was the album KVEIKUR in 2013. The band also goes on tour. On June 18, the Icelanders will play a concert in Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie. The London Contemporary Orchestra will also be there.

More about Sigur Rós

Already in October 2022, the band announced a reissue of their third studio album “( )” for the 20th anniversary. The 2002 reissue of the album was remastered by engineer Ted Jenson and includes B-sides and previously unreleased demos.

Their seventh and current album, KVEIKUR, was released in 2013. At the end of 2020 the band presented their orchestral project ODIN’S RAVEN MAGIC.

Last year, singer and guitarist Jón Þór “Jónsi” Birgisson, bassist Georg Hólm and keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson embarked on their first world tour together in a long time, celebrating the return of their keyboardist after he hadn’t been part of the band for a decade. Later in the set, they also introduced the tracks “Gold 2”, “Gold 4” and “Angelus 4” – all new singles that had not yet been released.
