Signi Search Dogs team at work in the city center of Marrakech

The Signi Search Dogs team from De Rips will visit collapsed houses in the city center of Marrakech on Saturday to look for people under the rubble. The dogs have now indicated in several places that there may be victims, says Esther van Neerbos from Signi. It is not yet clear how many people are involved.

The team arrived in Morocco on Wednesday evening, where there was a major earthquake last Friday. The team previously reported having located at least five bodies under the rubble. Salvage work is being carried out in collaboration with the Moroccan fire brigade.

On Friday the team wanted to go to the affected mountain village of Imidal, but that was not possible due to fog. For the time being, the team will probably stay in Marrakech, according to Van Neerbos.

No official request for help
Signi traveled to the country without an official request for help from the Moroccan state, with six people and four dogs. With the help of local contacts, the team was still welcome, according to Van Neerbos. The plan is for the team to fly back on Wednesday.

The search dog team was also in Turkey earlier this year, where it found people alive under the rubble twelve days after the earthquake.

Signi left De Rips for Morocco on Wednesday.
