Sidney Crosby chases Teemu Selänte

Sidney Crosby has scored 12+10=22 in 18 matches. The captain is the Pittsburgh Penguins’ best scorer and ranks 19th in the entire NHL stock market.

What’s amazing is that this isn’t 2007 or 2014 when Crosby won the NHL scoring title, but he’s still doing this hard in the 2023-2024 season.

Crosby’s game is also comprehensive, as evidenced by an excellent plus/minus balance of +11.

Teemu Selänten the 2006–07 season is benchmark for Crosby this season. The Canadian is now the same age as Selänne was then, 36 years old.

The Anaheim Ducks star scored 48+46=94 in the regular season. It brought Crosby to 12th place in the regular season points market.

At the age of 36, no NHL player has been able to do better than Slänte’s balance.

Not before and not after.

That’s enough of a challenge for Crosby. A table of steady pace would take him to exactly 100 points, so the age record is within the realm of possibility.

But. At the age of 36, Selänne led his team to the Stanley Cup championship and played seven more NHL seasons after that.

That might be even more of a challenge for Crosby.

NHL points at age 36

1) Teemu Selänne, 2006–07, 48+46=94

2) Jean Rate, 1976–77, 33+61=94

3) Alex Ovetškin, 2021–22, 50+40=90

4) Wayne Gretzky, 1997–98, 23+67=90
