Shrimp and cuttlefish most auctioned in Nieuwpoort
This year, 372 tons of fish were supplied to the Nieuwpoort fish auction, an increase of 12 percent. That is positive, but the better price for the product is particularly satisfying. Last year, turnover already increased by 14 percent, now by another 18 percent, to 2.18 million euros. (continue reading below the picture of the cuttlefish)
The number of ships has been reduced to 25, but the six Belgian ships managed to catch 70 percent of the catch. Shrimps remain the topper in Nieuwpoort, with 110 tons. Sea bass, sole and flounder are doing less well, but cuttlefish in particular are doing well. The supply has tripled to 57 tons. A cuttlefish or sepia is a type of squid.
