Jumping riders start World Championship Nations Cup with eighth place

6.57 pm: The Dutch show jumping riders of national coach Jos Lansink started the World Championship in Herning in Denmark with an eighth place in the first part. That was a jumping test on time. Maikel van der Vleuten was individually the best Dutchman with Beauville in fourteenth place.

Harrie Smolders was 34th with Monaco and Sanne Thijssen 36th with Con Quidam. The result of Jur Vrieling with Long John Silver (64th) does not count.

The gap in the stage on the Frenchman Julien Epaillard, who was fastest with Caracole de la Roque, is converted into penalty points. Sweden, for example, leads the country classification with 3.69 penalty points. France is second with 5.44 and Belgium third with 5.49. The Netherlands has 9.31 penalty points.

The Nations Cup has two more rounds, one on Thursday and one on Friday. The show jumping riders want to qualify for the World Championships for the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. Lansink’s team must then finish in the best five countries, excluding France.

Kristoff wins Circuit Franco-Belge

5:39 p.m.: Alexander Kristoff has won the one-day race Circuit Franco-Belge. The Norwegian from Intermarché – Wanty-Gobert defeated fellow refugees Dries van Gestel and Victor Campenaerts from Belgium in the sprint after 175 kilometers.

Kristoff took the lead with the two Belgians Van Gestel and Jasper de Buyst 18 kilometers from the finish. Campenaerts still matched that in the final kilometres. He tried with a long sprint, but could not stay ahead of the Norwegian.

It is Kristoff’s fourth win of the season. Earlier this year he won the Scheldeprijs.

The Norwegian will be the successor of Fabio Jakobsen, who won the race last year, then called the Eurométropole Tour. In the new final with many climbs, the pure sprinters such as Jakobsen and the Australian Caleb Ewan, who made his comeback after the Tour de France and a collarbone surgery, played no role.

Brussels to invest in renovation of the Red Devils stadium

4.04 pm: The city of Brussels is going to invest 6 million euros in the King Baudouin Stadium, where the national football team – the Red Devils – plays the matches. Among other things, the 50,000 seats will be adapted and the changing rooms will be renovated.

The Belgian Football Association would like the final matches of the Nations League to be played in the stadium if Belgium manages to qualify. To do this, the stands must be adapted to UEFA’s standards. The costs for this are estimated at 3 million euros. A major European public tender has also been launched.

The athletics track around the field will be completely replaced. There will be a brand new track for the international athletics competition Memorial Vandamme in 2023.

The King Baudouin Stadium has already been the setting for concerts by The Rolling Stones, Ed Sheeran and Coldplay this year. For such events, the capacity can reach up to 65,000 places.

Sef Vergoossen (75) returns to Roda JC as an advisor to the supervisory board

10.43 am: Sef Vergoossen returns to Roda JC as an advisor to the supervisory board. He will advise the supervisory board on football technical matters. The 75-year-old Vergoossen was head coach in Kerkrade from 1998 to 2001.

“In recent talks with the club, I have gained a lot of confidence in the path the club took two years ago. I am therefore looking forward to contributing to the club that I have so many fond memories of,” said Vergoossen.

In 2000 Vergoossen won the KNVB Cup with Roda JC, the last prize of the club from Limburg. After his period with Roda, he left for KRC Genk, after which he was a trainer at Al-Jazira, Nagoya Grampus Eight and PSV.

Roda JC started the season in the first division with a 2-0 win over FC Dordrecht.

Botic van de Zandschulp wins in Montreal

07:51 am: Botic van de Zandschulp has reached the second round of the Montreal masters tournament. The best Dutchman defeated the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic in his first appearance in the Canadian city. He did that in straight sets, 6-1 7-5.

The 26-year-old Van de Zandschulp won the first set with a great display of power – in just 23 minutes. The number 25 in the world hit five aces in the opening set and lost only twelve points in total. He cleared a 5-2 deficit in the second set. Van de Zandschulp concluded the game after more than an hour with a love game.

It was already the third time this year that the Dutchman hit the ten places lower classified Serb. At the beginning of this year, Kecmanovic won in Indian Wells and Van de Zandschulp was the best in Munich.

In the second round, Van de Zandschulp will face Briton Cameron Norrie, who is placed ninth in Montreal. Norrie was 6-4 6-4 too strong for American Brandon Nakashima.

The event in Montreal was initially quite plagued by rainfall. As a result, the schedule on Tuesday was overcrowded.
