Short track riders hand in hand on stage for gold medal

The Dutch short track athletes received their gold medals at Medal Plaza in Beijing for their victory in the Olympic relay.

Suzanne Schulting, Yara van Kerkhof, Xandra Velzeboer and Selma Poutsma were convincingly the best in the final in the Capital Indoor Stadium on Sunday, ahead of South Korea (silver) and China (bronze). Four years ago in Pyeongchang, the Dutch short track riders took bronze in the relay.

Schulting, Van Kerkhof, Poutsma and Velzeboer stepped onto the podium hand in hand. They hung together the gold medals presented to them by IOC member Ng Ser Miang from Singapore.

Schulting was allowed to enter the big stage in the Chinese capital for the third time at these Winter Games. The 24-year-old short track star previously won silver in the 500 meters and she extended her Olympic title in the 1000 meters. Schulting can also take a medal in the 1500 meters later in the week.

The short track players gave the Netherlands the sixth gold at these Games. TeamNL also took four silver and two bronze medals for the time being. The Netherlands takes fourth place in the medal standings.
