Vacation time, travel time, I was at Tegel Airport. Reporter curiosity or sentimentality? Call it what you want.
Until its final year of operation, 2020, TXL shoveled millions of Berliners into holiday paradises and back summer after summer. Short distances, as usual, reliable anyway.
Not a soul around today, just two security guys listlessly puffing away at cigarettes. Lots of barbed wire looking over the fence. I look down the porthole tunnel I’ve walked through so many times. But it is no longer a tunnel, the ceiling has been torn off.

In the distance the familiar tower, on which radar no longer rotates. No cars around, no taxis, no jets and no noise. He rests still Airport.
An advertising poster promises: “Apartments, science, jobs and lots of greenery”. I think back a few summers and how nice it was to take off here. That’s why I wanted to visit my old friend in Tegel again. Exactly at the time when life was otherwise raging in Tegel. Where this airport got in the way for all of us.
