On May 23, 2021, SpVgg Greuther Fürth was promoted to the top division for the second time in the club’s history. After the defeat against Bayer Leverkusen on April 23, 2022, relegation is finally certain.
First point of the second game day
On August 14, the clover leaves started their Bundesliga adventure. A week later they had their first point and were ranked 15th on a non-relegation zone.
Negative record adopted by Tasmania Berlin
After that, however, they were unable to add anything countable for a whole twelve matchdays and were stuck at the bottom of the table. With the worst start to the season in the history of the Bundesliga, they had replaced the previous record holder Tasmania Berlin.
First Bundesliga home win in club history
After most home games in the Bundesliga without a win, the fans in the Ronhof on December 12, 2021 smell of the 1-0 against Union Berlin on Matchday 15 celebrate something unique: the very first Bundesliga treble in the club’s history. On the 17th match day, the Middle Franconia team increased their points account by one point in the derby against Augsburg with a goalless draw. Five points, a goal difference of -36 and 12 points behind the relegation place spoke a clear language at the halfway point of the season.
Despite four games in a row without defeat, they are still bottom
After that, the Fürth team went into a series with three more games without defeat. They drew 0-0 against Stuttgart, drew 2-2 in Bielefeld and achieved a 2-1 win against Mainz. However, this did not change anything in the standings: SpVgg Greuther Fürth remained at the bottom of the table.
Respectable successes against Hertha and a few strong clubs
But the shamrocks didn’t throw in the towel. Instead they made it a 2:1 against Hertha BSC (22nd matchday) and three draws with 1-1 against Cologne (24th), 0-0 against Freiburg (27th), 0-0 in Frankfurt (28th). On Matchday 30, they had postponed final relegation by a week after beating Hoffenheim 0-0.
Always held on to coach Leitl
The loyalty of the Fürth team to their coach Stefan Leitl was outstanding. In contrast to the numerous changes at other crisis-ridden clubs, the 44-year-old has never been shaken. It is not yet certain whether he will move to the second Bundesliga with the clover leaves.
