Shopping in Assen? Please note: the city center is upside down

It had a long lead time, but today the time has come: the redevelopment of the city center of Assen is about to begin. A multi-year multi-million project should ensure that the city center becomes even more attractive.

A total of six streets are being tackled. This concerns the Kruisstraat, Marktstraat, Weiersloop, Oude Molenstraat, Oudestraat and part of the Gedempte Singel. These streets are located on Koopmansplein and Brink and have the same appearance. This will create more space for greenery and water, places to store bicycles, new lighting, good accessibility, space for activities and space to meet each other.

City center councilor Bert-Jan ten Oever hopes to make Assen even more attractive. “The Koopmansplein is beautiful, but the shopping streets that connect to it must also look good. Because with all the online shopping, it is important that the city center also becomes attractive to visit.”

Previous meetings showed that entrepreneurs are not satisfied with the communication so far. The municipality has chosen the same parties that provided communication during the renovation of the Koopmansplein. “Communication with the entrepreneurs and residents went well. There is one contact person available by telephone and everything is arranged quickly. I hope that will continue to be the case,” says ten Oever.

The city center is being renovated in two phases. At the kick-off of the redevelopment, it is the turn of the Weiersloop, Markstraat and Kruisstraat. First it concerns underground work. The redesign of the Weiersloop will start in the new year, followed by Markstraat and Kruisstraat in the spring of 2024.

The planning for the other three streets has not yet been completed. But the Oude Molenstraat, the Oudestraat and part of the Gedempte Singel will follow in the second phase. According to the project manager, this will be in the autumn of 2024 at the earliest, but it could also be early 2025. The cost of the plan is 5 million euros.
