Shocked after ‘chewing attack’: “Bird pierced the back of my head with full weight”

Screaming birds with sharp beaks: Jackdaws are on ‘warpath’ and have already attacked several people. They do it to protect their nests, but for ‘victims’ it is anything but fun. Adjo Poorter and Monique Spaans from Alkmaar know all about it. They have endured several attacks in recent times. “That bird suddenly turned around to drill its beak into the back of my head with its full weight,” says Adjo.

Adjo is not the only one in the area under attack – NH Nieuws

Meanwhile, Adjo is doing well. “I got a tetanus shot and now have a wound and a bump on my head,” says Adjo. He puts the event into perspective as ‘annoying’ and ‘just a bit of a shock’. “You won’t die from this, it’s not that bad,” Adjo laughs.

Adjo is not the only one who has been attacked by the birds, Monique Spaans is also a victim. “I think it’s happened four times in the past two weeks,” Monique said. She thinks it’s because she’s walking her dog and the birds see danger in it. “It’s been like this for several years around this time, I’ll take a detour from now on,” says Monique.

From now on with umbrella on the road

Monique thinks the birds attacked her with the legs instead of the beak. “Just as well, the blood was on my head,” says Monique.

As a precaution, she considers bringing an umbrella with her from now on, so that the birds can no longer attack her. According to Adjo, that’s not such a bad idea. “My downstairs neighbor already does this, I just don’t know if she’s using it to hit or protect herself,” he laughs.

Adjo thinks that the group of jackdaws in the neighborhood has become too large. “There are forty in the evening you also see them arguing with other birds,” he says. The Alkmaarder would therefore think it a good idea if the municipality would do something about this.

According to a bystander, the population has become so large that there is a lot of food for the birds. “We leave pieces of bread and half bags of chips on the street, which is why all those seagulls and other birds come here in addition to the jackdaws.”
