Shelter for veterans with PTSD in the former ammunition depot remains open

The shelter for veterans with PTSD at the old ammunition depot in Nieuw-Balinge can remain open next year. The province donates 150,000 euros to the Arsenaal Heritage Foundation, which supports former soldiers in their daytime activities.

The depot is full of old building materials. Ex-soldiers with PTSD perform odd jobs there and keep the complex in good condition. They keep their psychological complaints, suffered after a traumatic experience, for what they are.

According to the province, the project is a success. The veterans seem to thrive at the location of the depot, in the middle of nature. “The effect of the project has led to an improvement in the well-being of veterans and thus to an extension where the demand for structural financing was central.”

Thanks to the provincial subsidy, the project is certain for at least 2024. A new foundation, the Social Heritage Foundation, has been established to continue financing after next year

According to deputy Yvonne Turenhout (PvdA), the depot is of ‘great significance’ for veterans. “A place where they can relax and contribute at the same time.”

Sandra Hoekman of the Erfgoed Arsenaal Drenthe Foundation: “We are grateful for the continued support of the province of Drenthe. The depot not only has historical value, but also offers a place where veterans with PTSD can make a meaningful contribution.”
