Due to a shortage of fresh grass, a flock of sheep in Greece ate 100 kilograms of cannabis. The country on the Mediterranean Sea has had to deal with drought, forest fires and floods in recent summer months. As a result, much farmland was destroyed and it became more difficult for animals to find food.
The sheep grazed in the Greek region of Thessaly, in the center of the country. That area was hit by Storm Daniel earlier this month and experienced flooding. Fresh grass is therefore scarce, which makes it difficult for the animals to survive. The herd – desperate for food – entered a greenhouse of medicinal cannabis plants and ate 100 kilograms of the crop.
The owner of the greenhouse told the Greek news site ‘The Newspaper’ that his harvest had suffered enormously due to the heat wave and storm Daniel. “We lost a lot of production due to the heat wave. We lost almost everything due to the floods. And now this.” The sheep ate “what was left.” “I don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” he said. A local shepherd reportedly noticed that the sheep were behaving strangely, although it is not clear what exactly that meant.
Floods
Storm Daniel raged through Thessaly for three days. More than 100,000 animals were killed. A lot of crops were also washed away and agricultural production was severely affected. Hundreds of residents were evacuated and taken from their flooded homes in lifeboats; seventeen people died. It was the most intense storm since measurements began in 1930.
According to a study by a group of climate scientists from the World Weather Attribution (WWA), published last week, climate change has made rainfall worse in the Mediterranean in recent weeks. In addition, human factors turned the extreme weather into a humanitarian disaster.
