Sheep bitten to death by probably a wolf within a permanent wolf-resistant grid in Dwingeloo

Cattle farmers Johnny and Laura Nijland in Dwingeloo had three sheep behind their house, one of which was attacked by probably a wolf during the night from Thursday to Friday. The seized animal stood behind a fixed wolf-resistant grid.

“Yesterday morning we discovered that a sheep had been bitten to death and it was also our middle daughter’s birthday. So it is certainly a double day. Very unfortunate,” says Laura Nijland.

Wolf tracks were not found. According to the Nijland family, the BIJ12 appraiser found no defects in the grid. “This is an approved fixed grid with six steel wires that should be able to remain in place for twenty years. It has 7,000 volts and it has a clock that automatically adjusts if there is leakage current,” says Johnny Nijland.

“So if a twig touches it, there will be more and more tension. We do everything we can to try to keep the wolf away and then it goes through anyway.”
