Shane MacGowan’s wife celebrates five years of marriage and hospital discharge

She can now celebrate love with her husband after MacGowan is released from the hospital.

The Pogues singer Shane MacGowan has been released from hospital after being admitted in December 2022 for potentially life-threatening encephalitis. Another good news from the MacGowan household: His wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, announced via social media that they were now celebrating their fifth marriage anniversary.

Although the journalist and the now 65-year-old singer-songwriter have been together for several decades, they only tied the knot in November 2018 in Copenhagen, Denmark. And to properly celebrate this fifth wedding anniversary with her husband, Clarke published a photo from the wedding day via Instagram.

In the Instagram post on Sunday (November 26), Clarke shared a picture in which she is seen laughing in a red dress while MacGowan smiles back. The 57-year-old wrote about the photo: “This is one of my favorite pictures from our wedding exactly five years ago. Getting to Copenhagen was quite an achievement, and I think just getting through all the things we all went through to be alive was a huge achievement!”

She added: “It was beautiful to feel so much love,” and then thanked individuals for their support.

Shane McGowan: Photos from the hospital

MacGowan (“Fairytale of New York”) has been facing health problems for several years: For months, the Irishman battled a rare and potentially life-threatening illness in St. Vincent’s Hospital. He suffers from viral encephalitis, which causes the brain to swell. Clarke therefore regularly shared messages on social media about her hope that MacGowan could return home soon.

In an update on Wednesday evening (November 22), Clarke shared a picture of MacGowan smiling in a hospital bed wearing a scarf and bobble hat. She wrote: “Shane has been released from the hospital! We are deeply and forever grateful to the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Vincent’s. It is the best! And special thanks to Tom Creagh and Brian Corscadden for your help.”

Victoria Mary Clarke on love, fear and mental boundaries

On November 11, Clarke shared a long text about love via Instagram. In the post, she emphasized the beauty and power of love, but also the challenge of going beyond the mental boundaries of what love is. Clarke also pointed out that what is often referred to as love, in her opinion, can also be interpreted as attachment, desire or closeness.

When love is deeply felt, fears of loss could arise that would be beyond one’s imagination. However, these fears would provide the opportunity to expand consciousness beyond the limits of the mind and discover a deeper connection with oneself and others. Despite the fear of the unknown, she encouraged staying present in the moment and recognizing the beauty, grace and joy in the midst of challenges.
