Shakhtar talks to Tottenham about compensation for Solomon – trouble for Tete

Trouble over Tetê’s gala deal

The transfer of Manor Solomon to Tottenham Hotspur caused displeasure at the releasing club Shakhtar Donetsk, after all the Premier League club took advantage of a special FIFA regulation as a result of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine – and the 24-year-old left winger did not cost a transfer fee. Shakhtar managing director Sergiy Palkin has now announced that he is in talks with Tottenham about a compensation package.

Palkin’s contact at the Spurs is director Rebecca Caplehorn. “We agreed that she would make suggestions,” the club boss told “ESPN“. “We are now, let’s say, in a negotiation process with them. I hope and believe that we will find a solution. At this point it is still quite early to say anything concrete because we are in these negotiations.”

Solomon actually had a contract in Donetsk until the end of the year, but due to FIFA regulations he was able to move on for free in the summer. The Israeli played for Fulham FC last season, where he scored five goals in 24 games. Because Solomon was one of the players who left the country because of the war in Ukraine, he was able, according to the current regulations, to unilaterally suspend his contract with Shakhtar in the 2023/24 season without having to fear punishment from the association.

FIFA introduced the special transfer regulation before the start of last season, and it was expanded and adjusted in May. A new condition was that the player had to have informed the club he was contracted with by the official start of the season on July 1st. In addition, all foreign players and coaches who were registered with a Ukrainian or Russian club last season were no longer able to make use of the regulation. Shakhtar was angry about the special regulation and, like some other clubs, took action against it – without success. Because the provisions destroyed a normal Solomon deal with Fulham, the Ukrainian champions sued FIFA for damages last year. Palkin then once again announced legal action.

I’m not trying to make any profit.

According to the television station, part of an agreement with Tottenham could include Shakhtar contributing to a future transfer fee if Solomon is sold on. However, Palkin is more interested in recovering the amount that his club once transferred to M. Petah Tikva for Solomon’s services. “We want to cover our losses. That’s not big money for Tottenham. We paid 6.5 million euros and I don’t think that’s a lot of money for a club at Tottenham’s level, for a club that takes part in the English Premier League. I believe it is possible to cover these losses. “I’m not trying to make any profit,” said Palkin, explaining his approach.

“I believe we will find a solution. I don’t know if they will accept 6.5 million euros, but I believe we will find a solution. From an image perspective, they don’t need a case like this. A case like that doesn’t smell so good, because if you sign a man on a free transfer who was supposed to go for 20 million euros, that’s not good.” The 48-year-old emphasized the good relations with the London club and believes in an agreement within the next two years weeks.

Shakhtar Donetsk: Palkin complains about Tetê’s actions in Galatasaray transfer

Shakhtar is upset about another personnel change: Brazilian attacker Tetê has been active on loan for Olympique Lyon and Leicester City since March 2022, and in August he went to Galatasaray for free, where he signed a contract until June 2027. The Ukrainians signed the 23-year-old from Gremio in 2019 for a fee of 15 million euros. Legal action was also taken in this case. First charge according to Palkin: Lyon allegedly received a million euro fee when he was loaned out to Leicester City, even though he belonged to Shakhtar. “It looks as if they have unjustly enriched themselves at the expense of our club,” complained the club boss, who is demanding a refund of the same amount from FIFA.

Another point of complaint: Before Tetê joined Galatasaray, the professional did not inform his parent club in writing of his transfer intentions – which, according to the rules, they should have done. “We asked Tetê to return to the club several times and he ignored us. Due to his absence, we unilaterally terminated his contract. This means that Tetê has actually terminated this contract.”

Palkin continued: “He has a clause in this contract for 150 million euros. Now Tetê and Galatasaray share responsibility for this type of contract termination.” The world football association has so far blocked all of Shakhtar’s attempts, which is why Palkin is relying on the support of PSG boss Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, who is part of the European Club Association (ECA). “I also spoke to Nasser and he is helping us to contact FIFA and find a solution to help Ukrainian football.”

Palkin lamented: “On the one hand, how is it possible to release all of our players, terminate the contract and release them to the market? Clubs sign our players for whom we paid millions of dollars or euros, but no one helps us. At the same time, FIFA is urging us to repay all our debts.” After the war began, he had “debts of up to 40 million euros. This is debt for players who were released by FIFA and at the same time I can’t sell players, I can’t loan players out, but at the same time I have to generate money for players. It’s a ridiculous situation.”
