Shakhtar Donetsk hibernates in the European Cup: at least one more game in Hamburg

Lazio before the round of 16

Hamburg can look forward to at least one more game from Shakhtar Donetsk in the European Cup. In their third guest appearance at the Volksparkstadion, the Ukrainian club secured third place in the group phase of the Champions League with a 1-0 (1-0) win against Royal Antwerp – and thus at least participation in the playoffs in the Europa League. With one match day still to come, it is still possible for the Ukrainians to advance in the “premier league”.

On Tuesday, Mykola Matvienko (12th minute) scored the winning goal for Donetsk. The Belgians, who are coached by former Bundesliga professional Mark van Bommel, finished last in the group phase. The Dutchman trained VfL Wolfsburg for just over three months in 2021.

All of Donetsk’s further European Cup home games will probably also be played at the Volksparkstadion. According to “dpa” information, it is currently only a matter of final approvals when it is clear in which competition the club will continue. Because of the Russian war of aggression, Shakhtar’s home games will not take place in Ukraine.

Champions League: Lazio has a good chance of reaching the round of 16 thanks to Immobile

The Italian runner-up Lazio Rome made a big leap towards the round of 16 of the “premier class”. Thanks to a late brace from Joker Ciro Immobile (33) in the 82nd and 85th minutes, the Biancocelesti won 2-0 (0-0) against Celtic Glasgow and are now leading the Group E table with ten points. In the evening Atlético Madrid (10) can overtake Feyenoord Rotterdam (6) again. If the Madrilenians win against the Dutch champions, both teams will be guaranteed a place in the knockout rounds.
