Sewage treatment at Echten back in operation after toxic discharge

The sewage treatment plant in Echten can run fully again. Almost two weeks ago it was discovered that an as yet unknown chemical, toxic substance had been discharged.

Due to the discharge, some of the bacteria that clean the water had been killed, as a result of which the sewage water was insufficiently purified. The Drents Overijsselse Delta Water Board (WDODelta) has now added sufficient healthy bacteria to the sewage water.

According to the water board, the problems with sewage treatment had no consequences for users, who are located in the municipalities of Hoogeveen and De Wolden. “They could just use the toilet, bathroom, sink and washing machine.”

It is still unclear exactly what substance was discharged and whether this was done deliberately. The water board is having further investigation into this.
