Days of torrential rain have led to the fourth major flood in just 18 months in some areas in and around Sydney. In some places, as much rain fell on the weekend as normal in the whole month of July. Low-lying areas in western Sydney and areas around the Nepean and Hawkesbury rivers on the outskirts of the city are most at risk.
As much as 100 millimeters of precipitation is expected again in many parts of Sydney on Monday.
Thousands of people have previously been ordered to evacuate their homes in Sydney due to the risk of flash flooding and landslides. Heavy rainfall has also caused Sydney’s main dam to leak. The authorities fear that the situation will worsen and that the dam will then overflow.
