Today’s severe weather has also caused major problems in Austria. In the southern state of Carinthia, two children have died after some trees fell near a small lake in the town of Sankt Andrä. In addition, three hikers died after a lightning strike in the municipality of Gaming, in Lower Austria.

The deceased children would not be older than eight years. In Sankt Andrä, a dozen people were also seriously injured, police and the Red Cross reported. One more person is said to be missing.

According to the initial information, the hikers in Gaming took cover in a hut where a tree that had been struck by lightning fell on it.

The storm also damaged rows of trees along the A2 in Carinthia, and electricity went out in tunnels. The important connection to Italy was closed in several places for clean-up and repair work.

20,000 households without electricity

There were also problems with the power supply elsewhere. For example, 20,000 families are currently without electricity. According to the Austrian Meteorological Service, wind gusts of up to 140 kilometers per hour were measured.

Earlier it was announced that five people were killed on the French island of Corsica. Two people have also died in the storm in Tuscany.
