The incident occurred on Saturday around 11 p.m. in an apartment building in Koksijde-Bad. A witness had seen a man pouring gasoline in the entrance hall and in the communal hallway of the building. The police quickly arrived on the scene and arrested the suspect.
After questioning, the seventy-something from Koksijde was brought before the investigating judge. He decided to arrest him on suspicion of attempted arson, assault and violations of the Weapons Act. According to the initial findings, the suspect would indeed have intended to set a fire.
