Seven injured after explosion in home, explosion caused by tinkering with gas cylinder | Lokeren

Seven people were injured in an explosion in the Cyriel Buyssestraat in the Kopkapelwijk in Lokeren on Friday evening. Some were said to be in worse shape and suffered serious burns. The explosion was caused by a gas cylinder on the attic floor.

The neighborhood was startled by a huge bang around 9:30 p.m. At first it was thought to be fireworks, but it has now become clear that it was a gas cylinder. The explosion happened on the attic floor. According to the Lokeren police, people were tinkering or playing with the gas bottle, after which an ignition followed. It is not yet clear why and how they tried to manipulate the gas bottle.

Burns

A total of seven people were injured. This concerns five adults and two young people aged around 13 and 14. Due to the large number of victims, the medical intervention plan was immediately announced. Six ambulances and two mosquito teams arrived on the scene to provide first aid to the victims. After the explosion, a fire also broke out in the house. It was under control fairly quickly. In the meantime, all victims have been taken to hospital. Two victims were intubated and taken to the Neder-Over-Heembeek burn center. They are the worst off. Two other injured people also had to be intubated and were transferred to Leuven. The other victims have been admitted to hospitals in Ghent and Antwerp.
