FC Bayern Munich suffered a setback in the fight for the playoffs in the basketball Euroleague.
The Bundesliga team lost against AS Monaco by 78:83 (35:40) and after their fourth defeat in the past five matches they remain eleventh in the table with a record of 8:11 wins. The top eight clubs qualify for the coveted knockout round after 34 games.
An outstanding Corey Walden was not enough for the team of Italian coach Andrea Trinchieri before the break. The 29-year-old American scored almost half of Bayern’s points in the first 20 minutes with five successful long-range shots and 17 points. Nevertheless, the guests from the Principality were five points ahead at half-time.
Even after the change of sides, the hosts ran after the deficit. The Monegasques around the former Alba Berlin coach Sasa Obradovic had the perfect answer to every good Bayern phase and went into the final section with an eight-point lead (62:54/30th minute). After all, with Vladimir Lucic there was another Munich player who was able to score reliably.
The Serb or top scorer Walden (26 points) were no longer able to turn the match around. Monaco hardly showed any weaknesses in the fourth quarter and finally won thanks to Mike James, who scored 26 points, well deserved in Munich.
