Sero in an interview: “My album is very dark, but it also draws its strength from it”

Going through life “Pure”, that represents the motto and a single from Sero’s record MONDLICHT – even if this can mean pain. A page that is already emerging from its previous paths. Born in Schöneberg, he began with battle rap and later used music to draw attention to topics such as mental health. With REGEN, Sero already released an album in 2020 that gives space to the feeling of loneliness and at the same time makes use of other music styles across genres. In an interview, he revealed to us why pigeonhole thinking is outdated anyway.

The self-proclaimed “rainmaker” frees himself from rain clouds

Even if the screening of negative feelings represents a typical focus of Sero, the 30-year-old also vouches that opposites should not always be viewed individually. A duality that says there is positive in negative events and vice versa. An ambivalence that the artist reconstructs in both his previous and current album using weather metaphors. While he wants to give the German rap scene more “authenticity and humanity” with REGEN, MONDLICHT explains the contradictory relationship to the night.

“I shoot out the moon

Feels like in a dream

And I can’t get out of here anymore

Because the night sings so loud”

Due to trouble sleeping, Sero sometimes uses the night time to work on songs and reflect on his inner life. Curse and blessing at the same time, as the rapper told us. In a video interview, he explained to us why Sero sees the moon as friend and foe at the same time. We also talked about the process of creating MONDLICHT and which song could predict its future.
