Serious themes with sarcastic undertones yet suitable for the dance floor ★★★☆☆

New Belgian talent comes to us in Stromae’s wake, via the Deewee label of the dance duo Soulwax. Charlotte Adigéry, of Caribbean descent, and Bolis Pupul, of Chinese descent, bring vicious abrasive themes to the dance floor on Topical Dancer. Origin, confusion of tongues and prejudices thunder over each other in the poem. But it won’t be a heavy identity cost, because the packaging is light-hearted and the serious content is therefore given a slightly sarcastic wink. For example, in the catchy Blenda, Adigéry asks the question machine Siri where she exactly belongs, after a remark on the street that she should go back to her own country. “Siri, can you tell me where I belong?”
