Serious accident on N58 Rekkem: driver of flight, two passengers slightly injured
Saturday night around half past two a serious accident happened on the N58 in Rekkem. A passenger car with a French number plate crashed into a parked truck for an unknown reason. The car was completely destroyed and had to be pulled from under the trailer.
After the accident, the driver committed a hit-and-run: he was picked up by some friends in another vehicle. The two passengers, friends aged 28 and 31 from Tourcoing, were left with minor injuries. They were taken to hospital in Kortrijk for treatment. The driver of the truck was asleep at the time of the accident and was not injured.
An investigation into the driver’s identity is underway. The vehicle was registered in the name of one of the passengers.
Bad reputation
The N58 has a bad reputation for accidents and reckless driving. At the beginning of April, two more Frenchmen died after a blow to a bridge pier. (View the report below.)
During speed checks in early May, the police established speeds of up to 230 kilometers per hour. “Structural measures are urgent,” it sounds there.
