Is the duel between Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, who battled it out in the ’80s and ’90s over who is the greatest action hero of all time, now moving on? Barely has Stallone taken on his first leading role in the mafia series “Tulsa King” than Schwarzenegger imitates him in the action series “Fubar”. He relishes the role of badass, playing a CIA agent whose plans to retire are thwarted when, mid-operation, he learns his daughter is also an agent.

What follows is a kind of buddy action comedy series in which father and daughter constantly have to prove who is tougher. This is sometimes funny, sometimes exciting, but often also cynical, brutal and quite reactionary. In the last century you might have gotten away with something like that, but in 2023 the martial self-righteousness of the protagonists seems terribly outdated. “Fubar” is an acronym for “fucked up beyond all recognition” – and you’re not quite sure if that could be a self-deprecating comment on the series itself. Anyway, this round goes to Sylvester Stallone. (netflix)
