The beginning is a bit misleading: anyone who expects this to be just about a guy in his early 40s who is trying his luck in online dating after a failed marriage will be a bit surprised. While Fleishman Is In Trouble is occasionally funny because of the chaos the protagonist has to deal with, at its core the eight-part drama is drama. The woman (Claire Danes) is gone, but why? This is told bit by bit in flashbacks as Toby Fleishman (Jesse Eisenberg) tries to keep his work as a doctor and his two children while still having some fun with his best friends (Lizzy Caplan from “Masters Of Sex” and Adam Brody from “The OC California”). The key question is: If romantic love has fallen by the wayside, what is left?

The brutal thing about the series, which is based on the novel by Taffy Brodesser-Akner, who also wrote the screenplay, is that everything is actually so predictable: the couple is overjoyed at first, but slowly different ideas about life planning emerge, the tedious raising children gives them the rest. They no longer pay attention to each other, the worlds are drifting apart. The fact that towards the end of the season the perspectives are opened up and actually all paths of life are questioned makes “Fleishman Is In Trouble” even more interesting. (Disney+)
