David E. Kelley has managed to make us, at least briefly, sympathetic to all sorts of lawyers – the highly neurotic Ally McBeal, the narcissistic Danny Crane (“Boston Legal”), the broken Billy McBride (“Goliath”). So why shouldn’t that also be possible with a lying politician? However, this is about rape, which is why the six-part court drama “Anatomy of a Scandal” has a different impact. And Conservative MP James Whitehouse (Rupert Friend) hasn’t learned a thing from his carefree days as an elite college brat – he still doesn’t get the word ‘no’, he thinks he’s irresistible.
It’s not only due to the script, but above all to the actors that the story has many nuances and doesn’t make it as easy for the viewers as it sounds here. Guilty – or not? As a betrayed wife, Sienna Miller wants to believe her husband, if only because of the children. Michelle Dockery naturally sees things differently as QC, but she also has personal reasons for her anger at Whitehouse. The resolution isn’t entirely believable, but that’s rare in series like this.
The way there is as exciting as it is frustrating: “Anatomy of a Scandal” is an adaptation of a novel, and yet one can always imagine that it is based on a true story. (Netflix)
