From the “cards” to the finger raised: how the big news of the third series of Italian football works works

Do not call it var. And not even “var light”, “var on call” or other definitions. It is not VAR. The big news in the next Serie C will be the Football Video Support, men’s, summarized in FVS. And if you see in the middle of the field a footballer rotate the index towards the sky, he will not do it to indicate the audience, the stars or the climate, but to notify his coach who has happened on the pitch something to have the referee verified.

cameras

From the nothing that has sadly accompanied the category until last season (playoffs excluded) to the Var of Serie A and B is certainly a nice step forward. Serie C will no longer be the daughter of a minor God and, having also a total television coverage, will be able to guarantee help to the referees to correct what everyone (or almost) have been able to watch on TV, or who have noticed those on the field. Of course, with two cameras out of 27 fields (in the other 3 cameras there will be three or five), you cannot have the crossed controls of the VAR: for this reason the FVS will be a fundamental support to correct the most evident errors, certainly not the millimeters offside or penalties of complicated perception.

The four cases

At each stadium, a location will be set up (almost everywhere between the benches, if the stadium allows it) with a cover and a monitor, managed by an assistant from the CAN C. as for the VAR, the FVS is also used only in four cases: the regularity of a goal (including offside), penalties, tabs and identity exchanges. After each network, the fourth man goes to the monitor to ascertain its regularity and possibly report it to the referee for a review and perhaps the cancellation. Otherwise it is the coaches – perhaps alerted by their players with that index gesture – to recall the referee through the fourth man and ask for the revision of an unclear episode. Each coach will have two cards per game to be played and, when he recalls the referee, he will have to give one to the fourth man: if the review gives him reason, the card will be returned. Otherwise he loses it and, once exhausted, he will no longer be able to request checks.

immediate call

Incidentally said: in front of a doubtful episode, instead of running to protest from the referee, just raise the finger towards his coach, who will then decide whether to intervene. Obviously the call must be made in the immediacy of the offending action, before the game resumes, as happens for the Var. If instead the ball is still at stake, the referee will have to decide to stop the action in a neutral area of the field, certainly not with a man launched on the net … As always someone will invent herself clever, perhaps to break the rhythm in a convulsive phase, but the important thing is that everyone is grasping the meaning. It is an epochal turning point, errors and protests will decrease. In any case, do not call it VAR.
