Castori’s team wins but it’s not enough, thanks to Brescia’s draw at the Barbera. Inzaghi flies to the play-offs for promotion in extremis and condemns the rosanero
No more calculations, the championship is over and the playoff and playout verdicts have arrived. Parma made no mistake against Venice, winning 2-1 and moving up to fourth place with 60 points: Pecchia’s team thus flew to the semifinals together with third-placed Bari. Cagliari beats Cosenza 1-0, goes to 60 but is behind the Gialloblù for direct clashes: Ranieri’s team must be satisfied with fifth place which is worth access to the preliminary round of the playoffs. Sudtirol loses against Modena and finishes sixth: it’s 2-1 at Braglia. A goal in full stoppage time by Canotto sends Reggina flying to seventh place: 1-0 against Ascoli.
Despite the defeat, Venezia are eighth ahead of Palermo (both at 49) because they have the advantage in direct matches. The rosanero draw 2-2 with Brescia, a result that is not enough to still hope in Serie A. Gastaldello’s men win the playouts with the draw, together with Cosenza. Perugia beat Benevento 3-2, but it was of little use: the Umbrian club relegated to Serie C. At the Ferraris it was a show between Genoa and Bari: it finished 4-3, the rossoblùs passed in the 95th minute with a penalty from Criscito who announced withdrawal. The leaders Frosinone resisted against Ternana and won 3-2, the already relegated Spal beat Pisa 2-1. Cittadella and Como don’t go beyond 0-0.
Ternana-Frosinone 2-3

4′ are enough for the guests to find the advantage: Insigne’s left foot rejects Iannarilli badly and Garritano is quick to reply on goal. Then in the 12th minute Moro almost doubled his header from Rohden’s cross. Partipilo tries to even the score in the 20th minute with a shot from inside the area that hits the outside post. The 1-1 comes in the 29th minute with a winning touch by Favilli on a corner kick. In the 34th minute Partipilo manages to score by bringing forward his goals: dribbling and a left foot that punches Loria’s goal. Shortly before the interval, Sorensen saved Moro’s shot into an empty net on the line: the result did not change. In the 49th minute Falletti has a good chance, just wide. Favilli and Insigne have two excellent chances in the middle of the second half, remaining on 2-1. But only until the 75th minute, when Lucioni headed a corner kick to equalize. There’s also time for Kone’s third goal. Thus ends at Liberati.
Genoa-Bari 4-3
—
The classification already defined by Genoa and Bari nullifies tactics and gives Marassi entertainment, with Sabelli’s right foot opening the game in the 12th minute. The rossoblù defender takes advantage of the beautiful ball worked by Coda and strikes Frattali with a quick shot at the crossroads. 8 minutes go by and Mignani’s team equalize with Sebastiano Esposito’s masterpiece free-kick (20′). Chances on both sides and back and forth that continues with Gudmundsson’s rapacious goal (34′): the Icelandic tow in the area, prepares the conclusion and finds the eleventh seal of the season with an elusive left foot for Frattali. The goal festival goes on halfway through the second half, with Benedetti’s right foot from outside the area that brings everything back into balance. Game over? For nothing. Gilardino’s boys dive back into attack and find the new advantage fifteen minutes from the end, with Ekuban’s left foot. Another feat, not the least of an exciting race. With 5′ left in the 90′, Bari made it 3-3 with a pearl from the edge of Cheddira, but at the end of the stoppage time Genoa grabbed the 4-3 with Criscito’s penalty, which ended the game and the career of the winger, who returned to Liguria to bring his club back to Serie A.
Modena-South Tyrol 2-1
—
Sudtirol’s run-up to fourth place gets complicated right from the start, with the deadly one-two punch from Modena. On 10′, Bonfanti takes advantage of Falcinelli’s service and beats Poluzzi in the area with his left foot which means 1-0. Another 10′ and Magnino takes advantage of Poluzzi’s uncertain rebound, following a shot by Duca, and brings the Emilians up 2-0 with a right footed shot from close range. Bisoli’s team didn’t fit in and shortened the gap after the break: in the 54th minute, Tait’s shot from distance was uncatchable for Seculin and reopened the game. The guests try, but the score doesn’t change despite the chances in the final. Playoffs with sixth position for Sudtirol, tenth final place for Modena.
Parma-Venice 2-1
—
At the Tardini, Parma chased fourth place and went through just before the quarter of an hour with an impeccable penalty from Vazquez, granted after a foul by Candela in the area. The advantage didn’t arrive at the interval: the guests found the equal with the flicker of the usual Pohjanpalo, a lethal header from Andersen’s corner, and rekindled their dreams of extending the season. Hopes on both sides, with the lagoon players attached to the playoff train and other results. In the second half, Pecchia’s team regained the advantage and fourth place with Camara’s acute, who only had to deflect Bonny’s perfect assist into the net. At the final whistle, Vanoli and his team still celebrate for eighth place, thanks to a draw by Palermo.
Cosenza-Cagliari 0-1
—
Bomber Lapadula’s killer instinct unplugs the match at San Vito Marulla in the 24th minute: the Cagliari forward is the quickest in the area and takes advantage of Micai’s rebound from Pavoletti’s aerial shot to place the lead into an empty net and 21st center in the league. The Sardinians, who finished ahead at the interval, tried again at the beginning of the second half again with the B top scorer, but this time Lapadula was not very precise and headed the crossbar from Mancosu’s cross. The narrow advantage holds up until the end: Ranieri flies to the playoffs, but with fifth place.
Palermo-Brescia 2-2
—
Between playoffs and playouts, Brunori’s usual “9” goal unlocks the result at Barbera. It only takes 4 turns of the clock for the Rosanero attacker to sign the 1-0 with a nice right-footed shot at the crossroads and make 17 in the league. Shortly before the interval, the attacker also becomes an assist man and gives Tutino a golden ball and only one to shoot into the net. Order carried out and double advantage for the Sicilians at the interval. Back on the field it’s a new Brescia: the guests find a sensational draw in 2 minutes (between 54′ and 56′), thanks to the flashes of Pablo Rodríguez, on the restart, and Ayé, impeccable in the gap on Huard’s brushed cross . Gastaldello’s team holds on until the 90th minute and grabs the chance of the playouts. Palermo finishes ninth and remains out of the playoff group.
Pisa-Spal 1-2
—
The first chance belongs to the guests in the 20th minute, Tramoni hits with a header, Pomini gets his hands on it. Oddo’s formation again in the 38th minute with Maistro from the flag, Rabbi’s header hits the crossbar. The goal that broke the deadlock comes in the 42nd minute with Celia who beats Nicolas with a diagonal left foot. Immediately a dubious episode at the beginning of the second half: Calabresi raises his arm on a cross from his opponents, for the referee it’s a penalty. Moncini doubles from the spot. In the 63rd minute Pisa shortens through Gliozzi, but the attacker is offside. In the 68th minute everything is fine: Tramoni receives from the edge and scores. The guests already relegated to C win, Pisa is out of the playoffs.
Reggina-Ascoli 1-0
—
A strong start at the Granillo. In the 9th minute Strelec nearly hit the post, Pedro Mendes responded in the 20th minute with a blow from more than twenty-five meters which ended just wide. The landlords are once again dangerous with Hernani serving Camporese from a free-kick, with a header high over the crossbar. Before the interval Pedro Mendes again in the 43rd minute fired but nothing happened. In the 49th minute Di Chiara went very close to the lead on a free-kick, the ball out of nowhere. In the 56th minute Contini closes off Gondo well. The game lights up, Simic and Canotto waste two excellent opportunities. Everything happens in the final, Reggina needs a goal to win the playoffs: the decisive goal arrives in full recovery. In the 94th minute Canotto punches Leali diagonally and gives the Calabrians seventh place.
Cittadella-Como 0-0
—
At the Tombolato, a very physical and emotionless match in the first 45′. The match lights up in the second half with a couple of good chances on each side, from Cerri and Maistrello. However, precision is lacking and the result does not break away from 0-0. Fabregas also tries in the final, coming on for the last few minutes, but Como lacks consistency and precision. In the end, the right spark didn’t arrive and the championship of the two teams finished without goals: Gorini and Longo finished with one point each.
Perugia-Benevento 3-2
—
Ciano takes the measures in the 5th minute with a shot from outside Abibi blocks. In the 30th minute the result changes, the home team’s defense hurts. Schiattarella launches Koutsoupias who shoots, rejects the goalkeeper badly and Farias goes on the rebuttal: it’s 0-1. In the 35th minute Luperini hits his head, the ball hits the crossbar, Iannoni is rebounded by Manfredini, Di Serio collides with the goalkeeper and the ball ends up in the net. However, the referee cancels everything for a foul in attack. Perugia again in the 44th minute: Di Serio engages Manfredini, the ball goes for a corner. In the 48th minute Di Carmine tries a bicycle kick which is rejected by the goalkeeper. In the 52nd minute Veseli touches the ball with his hand following a cross from Olivieri, Lisi makes no mistake on the penalty spot. The 2-2 also arrives in the 57th minute: Di Carmine heads in and equalizes. Then in the 61st minute Farias made his opponents tremble with an outside shot. Even two goals arrive in recovery: Ciano equalizes and Kouan finds the final 3-2 which exploits a mistake by the opposing rearguard. It’s not enough for Castori’s team to take the playouts, it’s Serie C.
