Serie B, Brescia-Cosenza 1-0: the Lombards avenge the playout in an empty Rigamonti

From Brescia-Cosenza to… Brescia-Cosenza. With a different ending. It seems like a lifetime, yet just three months have passed since that thrilling playout that decreed the relegation to C of the biancoblù 38 years after the last time and the permanence in B of the “wolves”. Three months in which a bit of everything happened: promotions canceled and then validated, penalties, bankruptcies and repechages, including that of Brescia. Gastaldello’s team returned to the field, in B, and did so by winning against Cosenza but without its fans, the only aftermath after the disasters combined by the Lombard fans in the return of the playout at the time of the away goal with the launch of smoke bombs and barbaric invasion of the field to prevent the regular final match. At Rigamonti Brescia starts again with a bang: it ends 1-0, Bjarnason’s goal decides.

the match

The first opportunity hit Bisoli’s head after just 3′ but the attempt by the Brescia midfielder went off just over the crossbar. It’s a strong start, with a couple of hard saves from Bjarnason that lead to the Icelandic’s booking after a few minutes, but with a not particularly fast pace. In the 24th minute the match director Maresca whistled a penalty kick in favor of Cosenza but the Var recognized an initial offside by Arioli and canceled the penalty. In the second half, however, Brescia unlocked immediately: Flavio Bianchi fished in Fogliata area who initially closed the triangle with Bjarnason good at beating Micai for 1-0. The visiting coach Caserta tries to shake up the team by inserting the latest arrival Canotto, Gastaldello responds with the move Borrelli – another new signing – and Olzer. Cosenza upped the game without however making themselves particularly dangerous in Lezzerini’s parts, and in the 76th minute Sgarbi condemned his players to numerical inferiority with a meaningless intervention from red directed on the newcomer Borrelli. The game lights up in the final: first Calò goes close to equalizing from a free kick, then Borrelli just misses the match-point by hitting the post with his head. But it is an irrelevant mistake, because even without their fans, Brescia wins in their atypical debut at the beginning of September.
